Learn the history/philosophy of yoga and Human anatomy
I think this is the most obvious one. Because it is a teacher's course you learn the basic history/philosophy/ideology of yoga and also the human anatomy.
Its a great opportunity to get a deeper understanding of yoga practices and some ideas that could help you in your daily life.
One word that has helped me is 'Ahimsa' (Non-violence). It is the practice to be kind to your body and not to push yourself to the point that your are hurt. When there is a certain goal we sometimes to push ourselves too much to the point we are so drained. Allowing myself to take short breaks and have a little room for breath has helped me so much. It has allowed me to have more control of my mind.
2. Reflect on yourself
This point is kind of similar to the first point but there are so many opportunities to reflect on yourself during the course especially through the yoga theory trainings. In my yoga course there were a lot of opportunities to share opinions and discuss with fellow classmates on what we think about certain statements and how it is related to yoga and us.
One of the big eye openers for me was meditation. I used to think that meditation was a super difficult practice and we had to clear all the thoughts and be in a "Zen" state. But what I learnt was that, it was okay to have thoughts while you're meditating and it's just the matter of acknowledging your thoughts and letting it go. It is a great way to reflect on yourself and have a better understanding of your mind and body.
3. Develop self-love
Throughout the course we did a lot of self-reflection and lot of practices. As we learn more and more we understand that we all think differently, and react differently to various things. We also realize that because our bodies are different from each other we many find different poses difficult and others easier. What I learnt was that, as long as you are practicing to get better it's okay. Don't compare yourself to others, rather understand the state of your body and mind. Depending on the day you're body is different. As long as you are practicing, there will be progress. Slow or fast. You're body is agile but you have to be patient because nothing changes overnight. You're already perfect the way you are, yoga just assists you to be a better version of yourself.
4. Make yoga connections
Throughout my course, we had so many guest teachers that came to lecture us and practice with us. Not only was it a great opportunity to take classes from various teachers, but also it was a great place to make connections. It can be simple as introducing yourself to them and letting them know you are interested in teaching. They might be able to connect you with a yoga studio or a teaching opportunity. You never know!
Connect with them on social media and let them know you are there. I think it is a great starting point to starting your career as a yoga teacher.
My first teaching experience outside of the course was actually an opportunity
I got from a yoga teacher from my studio. He was able to connect me with a café owner who was doing activities on the weekends, and as one of the activities I taught park yoga. It was a great experience and from there you might get potential customers :)
This may only applies if you take the course at a studio, but its also a great opportunity to make connections with the teachers working at the same studio. There are so many classes going on and I personally thought that it was a great place to meet many teachers.
5. I made great friends!
Last but not least I was able to meet AMAZING friends throughout this course.
My course was a 4 months course and we had classes from 9AM to 7PM every other weekend. It was super intense but I think it was a reason it bonded us together.
It's very nice to have supportive friends because they will support you through the yoga journey. When I had the opportunity to teach park yoga for the very first time, my DEBUT, I had a few of my yoga family coming to support alongside my yoga teacher. It is just amazing to have such a supportive community!
